Digital Product Passport (DPP)

Digital Product Passports are expected to become mandatory across several industries as part of the European Union’s sustainability legislation. While the exact timelines vary by product category, the overall direction is clear: Digital Product Passports will become a core requirement for products placed on the EU market.

These changes are primarily driven by the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the wider Circular Economy Action Plan.

You can explore the full regulatory background in our detailed DPP guide

The Expected Timeline

While some technical details are still being finalised, the current roadmap indicates that Digital Product Passports will be introduced in phases over the coming years.

The first industries expected to be affected include:

  • Textiles and fashion
  • Batteries
  • Electronics

Current timelines suggest that the first Digital Product Passport requirements may begin appearing around 2027, with wider adoption expected by 2030.

For the fashion industry, this means brands should begin preparing well before the regulation becomes fully mandatory.

As discussed in our article Meet Ecodesign Requirements With ShareLabel®, the ESPR will require products to provide structured information on durability, materials, recyclability and other product-related data.

Why Brands Should Prepare Early

Although the regulation will be phased in over time, preparing for Digital Product Passports requires early coordination across data, systems and supply chains.

This typically involves:

  • Collecting product data
  • Mapping supply chains
  • Implementing digital infrastructure
  • Integrating data carriers such as QR codes or NFC

Companies that start early can integrate these systems gradually, rather than making rushed changes once legislation becomes mandatory.

We explore the practical side of implementation in our article: Digital Product Passport Example for a Garment.
